Fernando Alves

After collaborating on the Benguela Secondary School newspaper, Fernando Alves joined Rádio Clube de Benguela as an announcer on 1 July 1970, when he was still 15 years old. He had a deep voice and made no mistakes in Portuguese. Although he quickly created his own programme, he proved problematic because of the troubling texts he read and the music he played, such as José Afonso and Adriano Correia de Oliveira. In 1973, he moved to Sá da Bandeira, where he accepted an invitation from Emídio Rangel to work on a three-hour radio programme that he had on Rádio Comercial de Angola. Rangel owned a radio studio, collected radio advertising and employed seven persons. Fernando Alves stayed in the city after April 1974, linked to a group that kept Rádio Comercial, after which he moved to Luanda, to Emissora Nacional de Angola. On his return to Lisbon, he joined RDP, where he worked for thirteen years in the information area, except for football reports. When the free radio movement started, he joined TSF.
